Catherine Aitken - Scottish Fashion
About Catherine Aitken

Catherine Aitken is an Edinburgh-based accessories brand working with the heritage cloths of Scotland and intuitive design to create contemporary accessories for the modern urban adventurer.

Proudly designed and handcrafted in her studio in Leith, the bi-annual collections are inspired by people on the move, the city break lover, and created for those who want to connect with beauty, purpose and provenance.

Sustainable, slow fashion that’s practical as well as stylish, Catherine uses a minimalist aesthetic and an attention to detail that’s found fans all over the UK and internationally.

Catherine came into the fashion industry after a career producing films and documentaries for TV and cinema. It’s when she created bags to promote a film at the Cannes Film Festival that Catherine found a new career. The two elements of film-making and bag making lived side by side for a few years but in 2014 Catherine hung up her producing hat to concentrate on the eponymous brand.

Her film background still inspires today with her love for post apocalyptic and dystopian tales roaming free in the Renaissance range, created from vintage Harris Tweed jackets and other recycled materials, that’s an element of the collections from time to time.

The collection is sold online and into a range of galleries and small boutiques throughout the UK including the British Museum in London, as well as outlets in Europe and North America. Designs have also featured in most of the UK newspapers with features in magazines like Elle; She; Glamour; In Style.

A special collection was recently produced for Judy Murray using Judy’s own Harris Tweed, inspired by Wimbledon colours and that’s sold online and in Andy’s Murray’s Cromlix Hotel.

Catherine is happy to keep all her production in Scotland and the UK and works with local craftspeople whose skills help create the designs. From time to time she takes part in events that showcase the best in Scottish and British design and recently exhibited in Baltimore USA with a group of 20 designers, all organised and supported by Craft Scotland.
